Anderson, Ind. — Anderson University’s Wilson Gallery, located on the second floor of Krannert Hall, will open its doors to the public Friday, March 4, highlighting paintings by Indianapolis-based author and illustrator, Michele Wood.
Wood’s large-scale, lyrical compositions and figurative imagery highlight narratives of African American history using acrylic paint on canvas. Her art has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S. and is included in private art collections housed by the Indiana State Museum, Tubman Museum, and more.
“I have curated the exhibit to walk through three of Wood’s illustrated books, “I Lay My Stitches Down”, “I See The Rhythm of Gospel” and “I See The Rhythm,” which trace the evolution of African American history of slavery and music,” said Holly Sims, assistant professor of visual communication design.
The American Library Association awarded Wood with the 1999 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, and her work will also be featured at Anderson University’s York Children’s Literature Festival on March 26.
Wood’s work is encouraged for all ages and is a cross curricular experience that successfully merges visual art with music, faith, history, and storytelling. Music by AU student and pianist, Austin Morgan, will also be part of Friday’s event.
The gallery will open March 4, 5-7 p.m. and light refreshments will be provided. The gallery will then be open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through March 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or by appointment.
