AU, Sanders Announce $50,000 Matching Challenge Gift

Anderson, Ind. — Anderson University and John Sanders, a donor and Board of Trustee member at AU, have announced a matching gift challenge towards the Berenice Villarreal scholarship. Sanders will match contributions to this fund made prior to August 31, 2022, dollar for dollar up to $50,000.
“We’re grateful to John Sanders for not only establishing the Berenice Villareal Endowed Scholarship Fund, but for also now making this $50,000 challenge pledge,” said Anderson University President John S. Pistole. “The purpose of this challenge gift is to encourage others to invest in the lives of Hispanic/Latinx students attending AU. All of us here appreciate Mr. Sanders’ generosity and intentionality in helping AU make a difference in these students’ lives.”
The Villarreal scholarship is given to assist students from Latin America, other international students, or students who are immigrants to the U.S.

The scholarship is named for Berenice Villarreal, who spent the first 12 years of her life in Mexico City before moving to the United States. Despite hardships to make payments for college, Villarreal graduated as a double major from the University of Texas San Antonio in accounting and finance.
“After meeting our scholarship recipients I saw firsthand their passion for Anderson University and appreciation for the generosity extended to them,” said Berenice Villarreal, the scholarship’s namesake. “The dream that seemed unattainable is becoming a reality and will transform not just one life but those of their family for generations to come. I’m very proud to be associated with AU. It has been a great pleasure.”
