Anderson, Ind. — The Wilson Gallery at Anderson University will feature archived photography from the 1970s during the university’s annual Homecoming Oct.11-12 and the exhibition will close Nov. 8.
The “Memories and Traditions” exhibition explores the deep connections between cultural heritage, community, and the shared experiences that span generations. A special opening reception will be held Oct. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Wilson Gallery. The exhibition will be open to the public Oct. 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. as part of the Gallery Walk, which includes the Warner Sallman Gallery and Jeeninga Museum.
“The publications photos in the gallery hall bring this theme closer to home, offering a more personal look at AU’s traditions and experiences, especially during Homecoming,” said Holly Sims, assistant professor of visual communication design. “It’s a perfect blend of both university memories and global traditions, reminding us of the ways we are all connected.”
This exhibition brings together a selection of artworks from the university’s permanent collection and a photographic showcase from the university’s former publications department spanning 1970 to 1980. The artworks and photographs explore themes of continuity, memory, and cultural narratives, inviting viewers to connect with the traditions that shape our lives and university.
In the gallery hall, photographs from the 1970s capture the essence of student life during a formative decade, documenting moments of campus traditions and lasting friendships. The featured images of the class of 1974 celebrate a milestone 50th anniversary, providing a nostalgic glimpse into a significant chapter of the university’s history.
The artworks in the main gallery, spanning mediums such as watercolor, oil, and mixed media, explore paralleling themes of cultural heritage, memory, and community, reflecting the diverse ways in which traditions are expressed and preserved across generations through art.
