Anderson, Ind. — Anderson University recently received the $5,000 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service grant from Community Engaged Alliance.
The grant will supplement historical efforts on campus to honor MLK’s legacy by coming together in various ways to learn about the life and teaching of Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Thanks to Stephanie Moran, who wrote the grant for these funds, we’ll be able to expand this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration to include intentional conversations between our AU community and high school student leaders from the city of Anderson to inspire and challenge us on how we can take practical steps towards helping MLK’s dream of social justice and equality become a reality,” said Brian Martin, director of the Center for Intercultural Engagement at AU.
MLK Day at Anderson University is a time of celebration and fellowship blended with the difficult lessons of working to restore justice in places of inequality and disproportionate power in decision-making.
The day will begin with fellowship on campus. Anderson public and youth are invited to join campus stakeholders for a light breakfast and reflections on the life of MLK. Transportation is then provided to participate in the citywide MLK celebration hosted by the city of Anderson. All are invited to return to campus for lunch and a Gen Z summit that will be planned and executed by the Gen Z leaders in Anderson and at AU. The summit will host a panel of speakers, round table activities, student-led artistic expression, and action planning.
“Funding for this MLK Day of Service will empower local and university students to actively contribute by sharing their voices, visions, and ideas,” said Dr. Stephanie Moran, senior advisor for strategic partnerships. “Together, Gen Z can lead us in fostering a community and campus where everyone feels valued, respected, and has access to opportunities that enable them to thrive.”
