Summer Studies in music education
The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance offers Summer Studies in Music Education as continuing education for music educators or students working toward a Master of Music Education degree. Our summer courses include Orff Schulwerk, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Conversational Solfege, First Steps in Music, Ukulele, Grant Writing, Drumming, and more. Courses may be taken for graduate credit.

Housing
Option 1: University-owned studio apartments located approximately 15 minutes from campus on I-69 at the Flagship Enterprise Center. Each apartment includes a bed, bathroom, and kitchenette. The cost is $50 per night, pending availability.
Option 2: Double or single occupancy rooms in a University Residence Hall across the street from the Fine Arts Building. A full kitchen is available in the Residence Hall lobby. Full and free laundry facilities are also available. Double occupancy is $25 per night per person. Single occupancy is $40 per night.
Tuition Payments
A $100 nonrefundable enrollment deposit is due at the time of registration, which will be applied toward the tuition cost and will hold your place in the course. The remaining balance will be charged to your student account and billed electronically. June 16-20—Conversational Solfege: Feierabend Association for Music Education-endorsed teacher trainer Andrew Himelick brings to campus the pedagogical method focused on developing children’s music literacy through rhythm and solfege syllables. General music, choral, and instrumental educators will all benefit from this course.
June 16-19—World Folk Dances and Folk Songs: Lillie Feierabend returns to campus to share the music of fifteen cultures through folk dance, rounds, passing games, play parties, clapping games, and literature. This course applies to all grade levels.
June 23-26—Universal Design for Learning: This workshop provides successful instructional strategies for including and teaching music to students with exceptionalities. It can be easily generalized into all music education environments. This virtual course will meet synchronously from 5:00 to 8:45 pm EST each evening.
June 30-July 2—Audio Skills for Beginners: This 3-day immersive experience is designed for high school music educators, focusing on integrating audio technology into the classroom. Participants will also learn how to manage and optimize sound for school events and performances.
July 7-11—Mindful Movement: This course will guide participants through exploring and developing a personal mindful movement practice and offer practical applications for the classroom. Pre-requisite: Orff Level I or Dalcroze Eurhythmics Beginning Level
July 7-10—Technology and Children’s Literature in the Orff Classroom: Lisa Odom combines two of her most sought-after courses into one. Through children’s books and notation software, students will be encouraged to sing, play instruments, improvise, compose, read music, and perform.
July 14-25—Orff Schulwerk Level I, II, and III: Participants will sing, play, move, and improvise using the Orff Schulwerk model. Each level includes classes in pedagogy, movement, recorder, ensemble, and special topics. These courses are approved by the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. Instructors include Betsy Carter, Lisa Odom, Maribeth Yoder-White, Josh Southard, Aaron Ford, and Allison Croskey.

Conversational Solfege
Conversational Solfege™ is a pedagogical method to be used with children who have already
developed their tuneful, beatful, and artful skills and are ready to develop a deeper understanding
of melody and rhythm. This course will teach music educators how to successfully implement Conversational Solfege, which enables children to understand music and become musically literate.
For Credit: $1050 for two hours of graduate credit
No Credit: $800 (no graduate credit)
An on-campus materials fee of $30 will be added for this course.

World Folk Dances and Folk Songs
Community music-making builds a bridge where we are offered a glimpse into another culture and are delighted to find ourselves looking back. A country’s musical culture can also offer insight into its history, spirit, values, and heart. We can appreciate and begin to know a little about a people when we move in their footsteps, sing their songs, and play their games.
For Credit: $525 for one hour of graduate credit
No Credit: $400 (no graduate credit)

Universal Design for Learning
A growing number of students with exceptionalities and learning differences are included
in music classrooms. In addition, many music educators are assigned to self-contained classrooms for students with special needs for the first time. This workshop provides successful instructional strategies for including and teaching music to students with exceptionalities.
The class will meet synchronously from 5:00 to 8:45 pm EST each evening.
For Credit: $525 for one hour of graduate credit

Audio Skills for Beginners
This course is designed specifically for high school music educators, focusing on integrating audio technology into the classroom. It covers essential topics such as microphone techniques, production techniques, and basic video and audio streaming. Additionally, the course explores creative classroom technologies that can enhance student engagement and learning. Through hands-on sessions and expert guidance, educators will gain the skills and confidence to bring cutting-edge audio technology to their students.
For Credit: $525 for one hour of graduate credit
No Credit: $400 (no graduate credit)

Mindful Movement
Becoming a more mindful mover supports teachers’ and students’ overall health and wellness while enriching their creative movement, dance, and musical lives. This course will guide participants through exploring and developing a personal mindful movement practice and offer practical applications for the classroom. Students will generate a personal mindful movement practice and prepare a short mindful movement lesson for use in their classroom. Prerequisite: Orff Level I or Dalcroze Beginning Level.
For Credit: $1050 for two hours of graduate credit
No Credit: $800 (no graduate credit)

Technology and Children’s Literature in the Orff Classroom
Along with Children’s Literature, this course will explore the uses of notation software and presentation slides as tools that will encourage students to sing, play instruments, improvise, compose, read music, and perform! Process-based lessons will be shared and participants will create one project of their own, complete with visual presentations, using a book of their choosing. There is no pre-requisite for this course.
For Credit: $525 for one hour of graduate credit
No Credit: $400 (no graduate credit)

Orff Schulwerk, Levels I, II, and III
Participants will sing, play, move, and improvise using the Orff Schulwerk model. Each level includes pedagogy, movement, recorder, ensemble, and special topics classes. This approach is based on active learning and developing creative skills in children. These courses are approved by the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.
• Level I: This course is open to all music teachers and senior undergraduate music education students.
• Level II: At least one year of teaching experience is required before taking Level II. If you
completed Level I before 2018, you must re-take Level I.
• Level III: At least one year of teaching experience is required before taking Level III.
For Credit: $1575 for three hours of graduate credit
No Credit: $1200 (no graduate credit)
An on-campus materials fee of $30 will be added for this course.
