Barbara Jean Sanders Lucy of Abingdon, Virginia passed away on November 18, 2023, at Ballad Hospice House. Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, Annie Mae Sanders, and her father, James Roy Sanders, as well as her sister-in-law Susan Sanders. She was the granddaughter of the late Jim and Mae Sanders and Estel and Susie McGhee.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Calvin Lucy; her son, Eric Lucy, and wife Sara Lucy; her two beloved grandsons, Braeden and Tristan; brother, Terry Sanders; nephew Ryan Sanders; niece, Sarah Sanders; several uncles and aunts, and many cousins.

Barbara was a graduate of Rich Valley High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Anderson University and her master’s degree from Virginia Tech. Barbara was well known in the educational community for more than 50 years as a teacher, coach, and career coach. She started teaching in Haysi, Virginia and spent the bulk of her career at Abingdon High School where she also coached volleyball alongside her lifelong friend, Judy Wallace. Barbara was active in her church, and the Church of God ministries throughout her life, and walked closely with her Lord and savior.
