CARES Act Information

EMERGENCY FINANCIAL AID GRANTS

Anderson University has signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education (hereinafter “Department”) the Certification and Agreement for funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students, and intends to use at least 50 percent of those funds to provide emergency financial aid grants to students as mandated by the Act.

Grants to Students

HEERF I
The total amount of funds that the University received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students amounts to $782,080. Based on Department guidelines, the University identified a total of 1,171 students were eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act. Eligibility was determined by the following:

  • Enrollment prior to when the University moved to online classes on March 18, 2020.
  • A completed 2019-20 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA was used to determine an expected family contribution (EFC), and
  • Pell eligibility.

Students were sent information via email about the grants, explaining the eligibility requirements, on May 8, 2020. As of December 31, 2020, $780,907.04 had been distributed to these 1,171 students.

HEERF II

The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II) under section 314(c) of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSAA), the University was awarded an additional $782,080 to distribute as Emergency Financial Aid Grants.

  • Students were notified via email on April 17, 2021 about the availability of grants,
    • Total students eligible and notified: 1,092
    • Total students that received grants: 1,091
    • Total distributed to eligible students: $780,152.92, 
  • Eligibility was determined in the same manner as HEERF I, and
  • Eligible students were given the option to apply grants to their student accounts or to receive payment via check or electronic funds transfer.

HEERF III

The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III (HEERF III) under section 2003 of the American Rescue Act Plan of 2021 (ARP), the University was awarded an additional $2,094,437 to distribute as Emergency Financial Aid Grants.

  • Students were notified via email on June 22 and August 8, 2021 about the availability of grants via an online application process,
  • As of August 17, 2021,
    • Total students notified: 2,018
    • Applications to date: 424
    • Applications approved to date: 309
    • Distributions began: June 29, 2021
    • Distributed to date: $850,686.98
    • Applications, approvals and distributions are ongoing, 
  • Eligibility was determined in the same manner as HEERF I with the following amendments:
    • Eligible students refined as students enrolled on or after March 13, 2020, regardless of citizenship,
    • Eligible students must exhibit financial hardship due to COVID-19 needs,
    • Previous Title IV requirements were removed, and
  • Eligible students were given the option to apply grants to their student accounts or to receive payment via check or electronic funds transfer.

Institutional Portion

HEERF I

Anderson University received $782,079 on May 19, 2020 under the Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act for the Institutional Portion of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, of which the entire amount has been applied toward refunds of room and board charges made to student accounts during the spring semester 2020. The final quarterly report representing the use of these funds can be found:

HEERF II

Anderson University received $1,585,429 on January 27, 2021 under the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II) section 314(c) of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSAA) to replace lost revenue from academic sources. The final quarterly report representing the use of these funds can be found here:

HEERF III

Anderson University was awarded $2,091,655 on May 11, 2021 under the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III (HEERF III) section 2003 of the American Rescue Act Plan of 2021 (ARP). Distributions are summarized on a quarterly basis as follows:
