Anderson, Ind. — Anderson University recently sent 22 students to participate in the American Model United Nations (AMUN) in Chicago, Illinois. Building off prior success, the group brought home three  Outstanding Delegate Awards while representing the countries of Germany and Burkina Faso, and the German delegation was one of five delegations to  win an overall conference award for their representation of Germany. The group was also able to meet with a diplomat from the German Consulate General while in Chicago.

This year, 869 participants attended as a part of more than 99 delegations. Attendees came from 62 colleges and universities of varying sizes, including large state schools, such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Iowa.

“I am incredibly proud of all of our delegates and their efforts, both in preparation and while at the conference,” said Dr. Connor Sutton, assistant professor of international relations and national security. “They took time to learn how to be diplomats then truly put it into practice. I am especially proud of our Overall Outstanding Delegation Award. It clearly shows that AU students can compete at the highest level of model diplomacy, on par with students from any institution across the country.”

AMUN simulates the General Assembly First Committee (disarmament and international security), Second Committee (economic and financial), and third committee (social, cultural, and humanitarian), along with a Security Council and historical Security Council. The event also simulated the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and Economic and Social Council – Economic Commission for Africa.

AU earned three Outstanding Delegate Awards: Mylan White and Jedidiah Martin as Germany on GA Third, Christian Edwards as Germany on the ITU, and Ethan Harp as Burkina Faso on ECOSOC ECA. The German Delegation also received an Outstanding Delegation Award. Only five delegations total receive an Outstanding Delegation Award out of the 99 delegations present
