DC Devotion: Psalm 73

BY RACHEL (MILLER) LARSON, LANGUAGE TEACHER IN TAMANA, KUMAMOTO, JAPAN

When we look around and compare ourselves to others, we can become discouraged and bitter. Even though you are giving everything to God, you might be suffering while others are careless and are being rewarded. This may leave you wondering: Where is God’s justice? Why are they healthy? Why do they get a promotion? Why do they get to have a family? Why am I not receiving these things even though I am following the Lord?

When we lift our eyes up, we gain clarity by seeing him. We see that he is just, and he will set things right in his perfect timing. Other people may be receiving the things that you want, but if they don’t have God, they have nothing. Their health, wealth, and success will fade away, but God is forever. Looking to him changes our perspective and opens our eyes to the eternal.

We may not have everything we want, but may we recognize that when we have God, we have everything we need. In the hard times, God is good and he is with us. All other things will pass away – our health, our riches, our relationships, but what a gift that our greatest treasure, our good, our portion is everlasting. May we realize that our treasure is nothing we can find on earth and that the reason heaven is so great is because he is there.

May we fix our eyes on him and set our hearts on him. The greatest thing we can have can never be taken from us: his presence.
