DC Devotion: Psalm 145
BY KAYLA HARDEN, PASTOR OF CONGREGATIONAL CONNECTIONS AT EAST SIDE CHURCH IN ANDERSON, IN
When I was a kid, my dream was to be an actress. Like most kids, I wanted to be famous (and rich), but more than that, I wanted to leave an impact on the world. I figured being a famous actress was the key to leaving a legacy, to being remembered.
Now that I’m older, I realize that there are deeper, more meaningful legacies to leave. In Psalm 145, we find the psalmist praising the work of God in his own life in a way that sets the example for generations to follow. In verse 4, he even writes, “One generation will praise Your works to another, and will declare Your mighty acts.”
It’s important to share our experiences of God’s love, faithfulness, mercy, and compassion with every generation. My husband’s grandmother is 95 years old and she has been sharing with usher stories of how God has worked across the decades of her life. She once mentioned that she wanted our children to know these stories, so that even after she is gone, they will know that God was faithful to her. She has chosen her legacy.
We don’t have to wait until we’re 95 to leave this kind of legacy. Each one of us has a circle of influence. Spend a few minutes thinking of those in your circle. What would it look like to share with them the stories of how God has worked in your life? Is there a story you feel prompted to share? I encourage you to tell these stories.
Leave a legacy that points people to the God who is gracious, merciful, faithful, and just.
