Theodore R. Hicks
Assistant Professor of Music; Director of Choral Activities
Theodore Hicks is the Director of Choral Activities and Choral Music Education Specialist at Anderson University. He conducts the Anderson University Chorale and Vox Corvi (“Voice of the Raven”), and is a member of the voice faculty. His teaching responsibilities include private voice instruction, choral conducting, aural comprehension, and secondary choral methods, equipping students with essential skills for both performance and music education.
A proud alumnus of Anderson University, Theodore has extensive experience teaching junior and senior high school choral music in Indiana. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Anderson University, a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting, and is currently completing his Doctor of Arts degree in Choral Conducting and Voice Performance at Ball State University. His mentors include Dr. Andrew Crow, Dr. Kerry Glann, Dr. Timothy Workman, Kirk Young, and Dr. Richard Sowers, professor emeritus of Anderson University.
Theodore’s career highlights include nine years as the musical and artistic director of Circle City Sound, earning international acclaim within the Barbershop Harmony Society. He is a sought-after clinician and guest speaker, having taught conducting, voice, and vocal health worldwide, including engagements with Barbershop Harmony organizations in Germany, Australia, Canada, and the UK.
In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Theodore is an accomplished performer. He sings with Instant Classic, the award-winning a cappella quartet that won the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Quartet Contest in 2015. The group has recorded five studio albums, appeared on NBC’s Today Show and The Sing-Off national tour, and performed in countries including the United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as across the United States. Theodore has also performed tenor solos in major works such as Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s The Creation. In collaboration with pianist Stacey Edwards, he presented “From Lieder to Theatre,” a recital featuring Schumann’s Dichterliebe and selections from Broadway musicals. In April 2025, he will perform the tenor solos for Mozart’s Coronation Mass with the University of Tennessee: Southern.
Theodore is a prolific composer and arranger, with his works commissioned and performed by top choirs and quartets worldwide. His arrangements have been featured at Barbershop Harmony Society International Competitions and are published by Hal Leonard, the Barbershop Harmony Society, Sheet Music Plus, and his own company, Theo Hicks Music. Notable compositions include i carry your heart with me, which won the Best Original Composition award at Anderson University’s Concerto/Aria Competition, and The Glade, premiered by the Ball State University Chamber Choir in 2019.
A committed advocate for professional growth and collaboration, Theodore is actively involved in organizations such as the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), National Association for Music Educators (NAfME), National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), and the College Music Society (CMS). He serves on the Indiana Choral Directors Association (ICDA) board as the Repertoire and Resources Chair for Men’s Choirs and frequently presents at conferences, including the Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA) and ICDA Summer Conference. Under his leadership, Circle City Sound was a featured performer at the 2019 ICDA Summer Conference, and Instant Classic was a highlight of the 2017 IMEA Conference.
