From Lemonade Stands to a Full-Time Business
How One AU Graduate Turned Passion Into Purpose
“My entrepreneurial journey began at a young age, starting with the common tradition of driveway lemonade stands,” says Madelyn (Brown) Hamby ’23. What began as a simple childhood activity soon grew into something more meaningful. Over time, that early curiosity for sales and creativity developed into a clear passion.
By high school, that passion had taken shape in a new way. “This early interest in sales and creation evolved in high school, where I used my passion for baking, by selling cake pops, to fund mission trips and extracurricular activities,” shares Hamby. What started as a small effort to support personal goals quickly became a hands-on introduction to business.
Initially, the plan for college looked different. “Initially, my college trajectory was focused on marketing and design.” However, like many students, unexpected challenges shifted that path. “The COVID-19 pandemic prevented planned internships and professional opportunities in that field,” Hamby describes. As a result, a new opportunity emerged during a season of uncertainty.
“Seeking an income stream that summer, I returned to baking and cake decorating.” What began as a practical decision soon turned into something much bigger. “The unexpected success of this venture prompted a significant career reassessment,” Hamby says. With growing demand and momentum, it became clear that this was more than just a temporary solution.
Upon returning to Anderson University, that shift became more defined. “I consulted with my professors, who strongly encouraged me to pursue my entrepreneurial vision,” says Hamby. With their support, the next few years became a time of growth and refinement. Faculty guidance played a key role in shaping both the business and academic path.
“Over the next three years, the faculty at AU provided invaluable guidance, helping me refine my major, develop a comprehensive business plan, execute a successful rebrand, and much more,” Hamby explains. This hands-on mentorship made a lasting impact. In fact, “this support culminated in a senior year scholarship award from my management professors, which directly funded the launch of my food trailer.”
After graduating in 2023, that vision became reality. “I was able to transition my business into a full-time endeavor serving a wide range of customers. From birthdays, weddings, and holidays, to corporate functions,” Hamby says. The business continued to grow while operating under Indiana’s cottage kitchen guidelines.
The next milestone came shortly after. Hamby celebrates, “My dedicated food trailer was then launched for events and festivals in the spring of 2025.” What began as a childhood lemonade stand had now become a fully operational business.
Looking back, the journey reflects more than just professional success. “I am grateful that my work allows me to seamlessly integrate my deeply held values of faith, business ethics, and design aesthetic.” These values, shaped and strengthened during time at Anderson University, continue to guide Hamby’s work today.
