ANDERSON, Ind. — The 45th annual Newell Lecture in Biblical Studies will host Lynn H. Cohick on October 19, 2026, as she teaches on “Women in the Gospels: Proclaiming the Good News.”
Cohick (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is a Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Houston Christian University. She also serves on the translation committee for the New Living Translation (NLT). She is the founding president of the Center for Women in Leadership (letHERlead.com) and hosts the Alabaster Jar podcast.
Her books include The Letter to the Ephesians in the New International Commentary on the New Testament (2020); Christian Women in the Patristic World: Their Influence, Authority, and Legacy in the Second through the Fifth Centuries, co-authored with Amy Brown Hughes (2017); Philippians in The Story of God Commentary (2013); and Women in the World of the Earliest Christians (2009).
This event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Adam W. Miller Chapel in Edwards Hall, home of the School of Theology and Christian Ministry.
Following a 9 a.m. coffee gathering, sessions will begin at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. Cohick will speak on the “Sinful” Woman and Mary Magdalene (Luke 7; John 20), Mary and Martha of Bethany (Luke 10; John 11–12), and the Samaritan Woman (John 4), respectively. A Q&A session will follow.
“Dr. Cohick is a well-respected scholar who loves Scripture and teaches and writes in compelling ways that engage the questions many of our churchgoers and religiously curious neighbors are asking,” Nathan Willowby, dean of the School of Theology and Christian Ministry, said. “The chance for our students, alumni, and guests to engage with her lectures on this campus is a wonderful gift thanks to the ongoing influence of the Newell Family through AU’s School of Theology.”
