Coronavirus Update: Campus Housing

Good morning, students! Here are some additional questions and answers that have come up since yesterday’s announcement.

I can’t come during the assigned times. What should I do?

I am deeply sorry that yesterday’s information added anxiety to what you are already experiencing. Our intention for assigning these times is to limit the number of people gathering on campus at any given time. We will, however, do everything in our power to accommodate your needs. As it stated in the previous email, students should use the waiver form to request a different date and time. And don’t forget – All students are permitted on Sunday (3/22) and Saturday (3/28). See time changes below.

I can only come on Sunday, and I need my parents to help move out. Can they come?

The previous email stated that family and non-AU students are not permitted on Sunday. This has added a great deal of anxiety for students, which was not the intention. I am lifting that restriction, but I ask the following:

  1. If you are able to come on a different day than Sunday, please do so.
  2. If you need help on Sunday, limit it to those absolutely necessary (and they must be healthy).

We anticipate Sunday being the busiest day on campus. Monday-Saturday will be much better options if you want to limit the number of people you are exposed to. And of course, don’t forget the option to leave your belongings until campus housing reopens. Use the waiver form if that is the best option for you.

What if it takes me longer than three hours to pack?

Thank you for those who expressed your concerns. We want to make this easier on you, not harder. I am extending the hours each day next week to 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.  If you are still concerned about the time length, please use the waiver form to tell us about your needs. Please note: The KWC will be open 1-4pm each day for athletic item pick up, and those hours are not extended. Please stop by to pick up your athletic belongings during that window.

The new hours are as follows:

Sunday, March 22, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. for all students returning from spring break (but please come on a different day if possible)

I have a sibling on campus. Do we have to come pack at different times?

No, we are more than happy to accommodate families with multiple students. Just use the waiver form to tell us your need so that we can keep track of the number of students coming each day.

What if I have library books to turn in?

The library staff is very gracious and will work with students who still need their library items or are unable to return them. You may renew your items through the end of the year or beyond if necessary. If you want to turn them in, you can drop them in the drop box in the driveway in front of the library, or you may mail them to:

Nicholson Library
1100 E. 5th Street
Anderson, IN 46012

What if I have an instrument to pick up?

You will have access to Fine Arts each day, 1-4 p.m. to pick up your instrument. Please note this is a shorter time window than the packing hours.

What if I need to check my mailbox in Decker?

You will have access to Decker Hall each day, 1-4 p.m. to pick up your mail. Please note this is a shorter time window than the packing hours.

If you are not coming back to campus or do not want to come to Decker Hall, please use the Summer Information Form to tell us where to forward your mail.

What about my rented textbooks?

You will need them for the remainder of the semester, so keep them with you. We will work with the bookstore to make a plan for returning them. We will communicate when we know more.
