Did you know that 18% of AU students identify as First Gen? We have a robust First Gen community of faculty, staff, and students who are here to support you throughout your entire AU journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I’m a First Generation College Student?

You are a First Generation college student if your parents or guardians did not complete a 4-year college or university degree. 

Am I considered a First Gen student if my parents/guardians started college but did not finish their degree?

Yes! Even if your parents attended college courses but did not complete a bachelor’s degree, you would still be considered a First Gen college student.

Am I considered a First Gen student if other family members completed college but my parents did not?

While other family members may be a great resource to utilize, you are still considered a First Gen student! First Gen students are defined based on their parent’s level of education. 

What Percentage of students are considered First Gen at AU?

As of Fall 2023, 18% of AU students identified as First Gen.

Are there on campus jobs for students?

Yes! AU offers a wide range of on campus job opportunities for students to earn money for college expenses, develop professional skills, and explore their academic and career interests. When classes are in session, students may work up to 15 hours per week under the student employment program (or 20 hours per week for International students). National First Generation Day

National First Generation Day is on November 8th! On this day, we celebrate all students, faculty, and staff who are the first in their family to graduate with a 4-year degree from a university in the United States.
