Andersonian Receives Two ICPA Awards for Student Journalism
Student journalists recognized for excellence in feature writing and podcasting at the statewide collegiate press competition.
Anderson Ind. — Anderson University’s student newspaper, the Andersonian, proudly received two awards from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) for its 2025 reporting.
The ICPA has over 40 member publications. These include newspapers, news magazines, literary magazines, yearbooks, and online publications.
Every year it receives award entries from over 30 of Indiana’s public and private universities, both large and small.
Catherina Shultz
Recent graduate Catherina Shultz ‘26 won third place in Division 3 Online Feature Writing for her profile piece, “Scott Moats Embraces a Calling to ‘Rise Up and Build’ at Anderson University.”
The story included President Moats’ original thoughts on his presidential appointment. It also included his approach to the job, which he calls the “Faithful Campus” model. It was published on September 26, 2025.
“I came up with the idea of writing about President Scott Moats by thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be an honor to see what the new president of the university is like? What he’s going to do? How he’s going to impact the university?’” Shultz said.
Miles Morey
Miles Morey ‘25 won first place for his Division 3 podcasting entry, “President John Pistole Retrospective: God Qualifies the Called.”
Morey interviewed former AU President John Pistole in a 27-minute segment, published May 20, 2025.
Questions focused on Pistole’s AU career as his 10-year presidency drew to a close.
The judge for Morey’s work wrote, “Truly an organic, well-prepared, and captivating interview. Miles, your natural ability to ask the appropriate questions is a gift, and your admiration for your former President and your institution is recognized. Truly an enjoyable listening experience, and never stop interviewing. Good job, and clearly a great guest.”
Awards were presented at the ICPA’s annual conference on April 18, 2026, at Indiana University Bloomington.
“We are absolutely thrilled to see Catherina and Miles awarded for their hard work,” said Peter Elliott, associate professor of English and faculty sponsor for the Andersonian.“We have a small yet talented staff that is working consistently to learn the craft of journalism and grow their writing and reporting talents.”
