Anderson University Earns Top Distinctions in Science of Reading Reviews
Elementary teacher preparation programs receive the highest ratings from two national science of reading review organizations
Anderson, Ind.—Anderson University’s undergraduate and Transition to Teaching elementary programs have earned top distinctions through two science of reading review processes. Both programs received A+ ratings through reviews conducted by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), which evaluated program coursework and instructional materials, and both earned the highest possible rating of “strong” in all review areas during an onsite review conducted by Teacher Preparation Inspection–United States (TPI-US) as part of Indiana’s science of reading initiative.
Together, these recognitions affirm Anderson University’s commitment to preparing future educators through rigorous coursework, meaningful clinical experiences, and continuous improvement grounded in the science of reading.
Effective reading instruction begins with effective teacher preparation. With one in three Indiana fourth graders not reading at the basic level on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), ensuring that future educators are equipped with evidence-based literacy practices is essential. High-quality teacher preparation programs help ensure that future teachers enter the classroom ready to support the literacy development of all students.
The two reviews examined Anderson University’s elementary educator preparation programs through different but complementary lenses. NCTQ conducted extensive desk reviews of course syllabi, readings, assessments, assignments, and opportunities for candidates to practice evidence-based literacy instruction. Both the undergraduate and transition to teaching elementary programs earned A+ ratings, the highest designation awarded through the review process.
TPI-US conducted extensive onsite evaluations of both programs, examining literacy coursework, candidate performance, clinical experiences, feedback systems, and continuous improvement efforts. Both programs earned the highest possible rating of “Strong” in all three review areas:
- Quality of Literacy Coursework
- Quality of Clinical Placement, Feedback, and Candidate Performance
- Quality of Performance Management and Continuous Improvement
“These recognitions validate the longstanding commitment of our elementary teacher preparation programs to evidence-based literacy instruction and to preparing teacher candidates to meet the needs of all learners,” Katy Sample, associate professor of reading education and director of the Anderson University Reading Clinic, said. “What is particularly meaningful is that these reviews examined our programs from different perspectives and arrived at the same conclusion. NCTQ recognized the quality of our reading preparation through extensive desk reviews of program materials, while TPI-US confirmed through an on-site evaluation that those practices are being implemented effectively through coursework, clinical experiences, coaching, and continuous improvement. Whether candidates enter elementary teaching through our traditional undergraduate pathway or our transition to teaching program, they are prepared through the same commitment to evidence-based literacy instruction.”
Sample added, “We are especially encouraged that the NCTQ review recognized the strength of our preparation for supporting a range of learners. The program ranked in the 99th percentile among evaluated programs for preparing teachers to support struggling readers and students who speak language varieties other than General American English, and in the 81st percentile for preparing teachers to support English learners. These findings reflect our commitment to ensuring every future teacher is equipped to meet the needs of diverse students and help all children become successful readers.”
“This recognition is another strong external affirmation of the academic excellence embedded in Anderson University’s teacher preparation programs,” Provost Courtney K. Taylor said. “Our distinction in the science of reading demonstrates that our graduates will be well-prepared to meet the demands of the classroom and to serve their students through evidence-based practice.”
Anderson University has made literacy preparation a central focus of its elementary preparation programs. Through partnerships with local schools, the Anderson University Reading Clinic, and innovative coaching and observation systems, candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to translate reading science into effective classroom practice and improve literacy outcomes for all students.
