Management students gain practical knowledge through simulation

Students in Anderson University Professor of Management Dr. Michael Collette’s strategic management class are learning what it takes to run their own business. The students are making strategic business decisions for simulated companies selling athletic shoes, and each decision plays a major role in how the business works. At the end of the semester, students evaluate their strategies and find out how their simulated shoe sales compared with sales from student groups at other universities.

This year, seven groups from Collette’s class are competing with each other, as well as with other schools internationally. Although AU only enters teams from a single undergraduate class, they are competing against both undergraduate and graduate programs.

“When you get to manage all those decisions, you basically come up with a competitive strategy against all the other groups,” said senior psychology major Rachel Jones, a member of one of the groups. Her group also included senior marketing majors Drew Beechler and Caitlin Evans.

The business simulation gives students an experiential learning outlet that Collette believes will give them an advantage in the business world.

“The students who do well are the students who want to really take the time to think about how they are going to compete in the industry and how they are going to compete at a higher level than everybody else,” said Collette. “Part of it is really looking at what competitive strategy that organization wishes to pursue. The second step is, given that competitive strategy, to determine what other strategic decisions they have to put in place to support that strategy.”

By the end of the semester, the seniors participating in the business simulation have had the opportunity to apply all of the skills, knowledge, and strategies that have been gained throughout their classes at the Falls School of Business, and this course adds an experiential learning opportunity to take into the real world.
