Elizabeth Imafuji, assistant professor of English and director of first year composition at Anderson University, recently had an article published and was appointed president of the Indiana College English Association (ICEA).
ICEA is a professional organization that is focused on both scholarship and teaching. The association brings together faculty, students, and creative writers who desire to be part of a literary culture. The ICEA is one chapter of the national College English Association, a consortium of college English professors and students. Additionally, Imafuji serves on the board of directors for the chapter.
Dr. Scott Borders, professor of English and an active member of ICEA, nominated Imafuji to chair an ICEA annual conference that took place at AU. After chairing the conference, Imafuji took the role as president of the association.
“I love all of the professional development and networking opportunities that happen at the conference,” says Imafuji. “At the conference, I get the opportunity to work with other people, talk to professors from similar schools, exchange ideas, and challenge myself.”
In addition to her work with the ICEA, Imafuji recently contributed to an article on activity theory, a social science and learning theory. Imafuji worked with six other graduate students to complete an article entitled “A Qualitative Metasynthesis of Activity Theory in SIGDOC Proceedings 2001-2011.”
The work completed by Imafuji and her fellow graduate students focuses on how activity theory has been used in the past and how it can be used in alternative ways for the future. To complete the publication, the graduate students researched hundreds of articles on how activity theory has been used in the last decade in technical writing. They then used this information to show how activity theory could be used in both technical writing and design.
“Although I have never collaborated prior to the publication of this article, I found it to be a rewarding experience,” said Imafuji.
Her drive to gather professional experience has been noticed by the other faculty in the English department. “Elizabeth is such a hard and conscientious worker. She has been very dedicated to being a professor to not only her first year students, but to all the additional courses she teaches for us, all while pursuing a Ph.D.,” said Dr. Kevin Radaker, chair of the English department. “Although this passion is enough in itself, in addition she brings a kind and nurturing demeanor to the workplace.”
Imafuji plans to continue her work with the ICEA board and steering committee. She credits the university for stimulating a desire to pursue academic goals. “I am grateful that AU encourages professors to continually seek out professional development,” said Imafuji. “I am finding it extremely rewarding and useful in my teaching career.”
