From February 24 through March 22, the Wilson Galleries at Anderson University will host the annual Juried Student Exhibition. The opening reception and award ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. This year’s juror, Sarojini Jha Johnson, will give a gallery talk at 4 p.m. Her work will be exhibited in conjunction with the student work selected for the exhibition.

The Juried Student Exhibition is a competition open to all Art+Design students, regardless of year or major. The juror selects the works for the show and gives awards for Best of Show as well as specific areas of study. A broad spectrum of media are typically represented, including: painting, drawing, design, sculpture, print media, and photography. It’s a great opportunity to see the kind of work being created by Art+Design students at all levels.

Since 2010, the Wilson Galleries have hosted a Juror’s Exhibition alongside the Student Juried Exhibition. Seeing the artwork and reading the statement of the guest juror give both students and gallery visitors a helpful context for the selection of work in the student show.

This exhibition’s juror, Sarojini Jha Johnson, has taught printmaking and foundations at Ball State University since 1985. While originally from India, she grew up in Ohio and earned undergraduate degrees in French and drawing from the University of Cincinnati. She received an MFA in printmaking from Miami University where she began working with animal and plant forms. Using color intaglio, Johnson places natural forms in fictional contexts to reflect on her experiences and family roots in India.

The Jessie C. Wilson Galleries serve Anderson University and East Central Indiana with monthly exhibitions that feature the work of regionally and nationally recognized artists. Through these exhibitions, the gallery is dedicated to enriching and engaging AU students, as well as promoting the visual arts within the greater community.
