Biology

Through the integration of faith and learning, the Department of Biology strives to give students a breadth of foundational knowledge that will serve them, whether they plan to teach or to continue their own education in medical or dental school or other graduate degree programs.

The biology department is dedicated to providing students with a well-rounded background in the field of biology. Students can concentrate their studies in various areas of biology by taking courses such as anatomy, physiology, histology, mammalian physiology, molecular biology, plant science, and environmental ecology. Students interested in botany and entomology can also pursue their own individual course route. Biology majors are encouraged to design individual projects that examine and investigate their particular area of interest.

Facilities

Hartung Hall, a state-of-the-art science building, was part of a $5.5 million, 30,000-square-foot expansion and renovation project. New classrooms and quality instrumentation make AU one of the best study opportunities available. Laboratories are equipped with such instruments as physiographs, binocular oil scopes, tissue culture equipment, various centrifuges, and other state-of-the-art equipment.

Job Placement

Our graduates have a high level of success in entry-level positions with corporations and organizations like Eli Lilly, Indiana University Medical Center, Proctor and Gamble, and Madison County Heart Association. Graduates are employed in such areas of research as production technicians, scientific equipment and supply salespeople, and county and sate health department staff members. Many students participate in summer internship programs with these companies and others.
