The Penelopiad

In Homer’s The Odyssey, we are introduced to Penelope — wife of Odysseus and cousin to Helen of Troy — as the woman who waits patiently for Odysseus to return home from his 20-year adventure in the Trojan War. In The Penelopiad, Margaret Atwood offers a witty and poetic retelling of this story from the perspective of Penelope and her 12 maidens, all of whom were hanged by Odysseus when he returned home. This version of the timeless legend has been called “wise, compassionate, haunting, and entertaining.” Atwood, known for her strong story-telling skills, provides new insights into Penelope’s humanity and an answer to the ancient mystery of the 12 maidens.
