Lois Settlemeyer earned two degrees from Anderson University decades ago, so when she learned she would be receiving an honorary doctorate from her alma mater she was shocked.
“I was just amazed to hear the news,” the now-award-winning photographer said. “What an honor.”
During Saturday’s graduation service, Settlemeyer was one of four to receive an honorary degree, along with Charles Dickmann, Frank Campbell, and Johnny Wilson.
Identical twins Elizabeth and Katherine Barwick anxiously lined up outside Anderson University’s Reardon Auditorium, adjusting their black caps and gowns.
It had been a lot of hard work, but the Mishawaka women said there was much fun mixed in with that dedication and they would miss their experiences from college.
They were just two of 645 who graduated from AU on Saturday afternoon at the Kardatzke Wellness Center.
Norberto and Julie Kurrle seemed to have everything going for them.
The Anderson University graduates had an active missionary program going in Paraguay, he with a radio ministry and she with Children of Promise. They had an active 6-year-old, Timmy, and had finalized the adoption of 1-year-old Anahi. And, it was told later, Julie was six weeks pregnant. They were preparing to return to the United States for a three-month furlough. Life was good.
Back in October 2010, when a thief broke into Anderson University alumni Norberto and Julie Kurrle’s home in Paraguay where they did mission work, Julie was alone with their son, Timmy, who was only 4 at the time. She detailed fighting with the thief for a few minutes before giving him the money in her purse in her blog. And as he tied her up so he could search for more money, she prayed out loud for him.
The Anderson University School of Theology and the Center for Christian Leadership will welcome Dr. Adolfo Roitman on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, for the 31st Annual Newell Lectures in Biblical Studies. Roitman will present lectures focused on the Dead Sea Scrolls.
