Anderson University junior Ethan Wells received an Indiana Broadcasters Association (IBA) Scholarship for the fall of 2014.

“I am delighted but not surprised to hear that the Indiana Broadcasters Association have awarded a scholarship to Ethan," said Dr. Don Boggs, professor of communication arts. "He has been a dedicated student and also a valued employee at WQME 98.7 FM. We are fortunate to have him at Anderson University.”

Wells was born and raised in Anderson, Ind. and graduated from Liberty Christian High School in 2011. During his high school years, he spent his time operating audio/video equipment for school, and church services, which included the children, teen, and adult services. He discovered his love of technology, and found himself operating soundboards, light boards, video switchers, cameras, computers, and spotlights.

When Wells started college at Anderson University as an audio/video/cinema production major, he knew he was in the right field of study. He started freshman year as a volunteer with WQME 98.7 FM and received on-air shifts during the weekends. He has progressed to become a student manager, starting at the end of his freshman year. As a student manager, Wells is responsible for on-air shifts, sports casts, production, remotes, and other various jobs. Starting the summer of 2013, Wells became the manager on-call, fixing technical/scheduling problems at a moment’s notice.

Wells notes that working at WQME, as well as his experience at Anderson University has helped him find what he loves to do. He plans to pursue radio broadcasting, radio production, and possibly voice acting as a professional career.

For the third year, the IBA agreed to match station contributions awarding $34,000 in scholarships to seven current high school seniors and nine current college/university students. There were 63 high school applications and 56 college/university applications. Half the scholarship funds came from station donations and the IBA Board voted to match those funds.

The following are the stations contributing to the 2014 IBA Scholarship fund: DC Broadcasting, WITZ-WQKZ of Jasper; WAJI/WLDE, WISE-TV, WPTA-TV of Ft. Wayne; WBIW-AM, WQRK-FM, WPHZ-FM of Bedford; WBAA AM/FM, WLFI-TV of W.
