This diverse exhibition will survey the works of two renowned tapestry artists using inventive imagery filled with dynamic color and pattern. This collection of works combines the experience of time, technology, and the tactile relationship of artist and object as various weaving methods impact the formal qualities within each piece.
Janice Lessman-Moss, Professor of Textile Art at Kent State University, received her BFA from Tyler School of Art and her MFA from the University of Michigan. She has exhibited her weavings throughout the United States and internationally, and has received a number of Individual Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council and an Arts Midwest/National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Crafts. In her textiles, patterns provide a platform of engaging the shifting balance of intellectual with the intuitive.
Sherri Smith is the Catherine Heller Professor of Art at the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan, where she has taught fibers since 1974. She earned a BA with honors from Stanford University and an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art, after which she went to New York to become a textile designer. Smith’s current textile work is strip woven and takes its images from sciences and mathematics.
The Jessie C. Wilson Galleries serve Anderson University and East Central Indiana with monthly exhibitions that feature the work of regionally and nationally recognized artists. Through these exhibitions, the gallery is dedicated to enriching and engaging AU students, as well as promoting the visual arts within the greater community.
