Anderson University alumna Alyssa Applegate recently secured a position as a social media extern at Ogilvy Public Relations. Ogilvy is ranked eighth among public relations agencies in the world by The Holmes Report, a reputable public relations reporting and analysis company.

Within a week of applying for the position, Applegate had an interview with the senior vice president of Ogilvy’s Atlanta office, and was offered the job. This was no surprise to Rebecca Fuller Beeler, assistant professor of communication and Applegate’s advisor. “As a student, Alyssa was prepared, thorough, and hardworking,” said Fuller Beeler. “I could always count on her to produce high-quality, well-researched work.”

As a social media extern, Applegate works heavily with a major restaurant conglomerate. She does research for some of the company’s smaller chains and evaluates the restaurants’ social media presence in order to improve it. She was pleasantly surprised to find that the research class she once found difficult at AU was truly beneficial.

Fuller Beeler, who teaches the class, explained that her goal in the research class is for students to learn the basics of research and understand how to apply those concepts in their careers.

Applegate did not originally envision herself in a position that involved math and analysis. “It’s a lot different than traditional PR, but I really like it,” said Applegate.

Through Applegate’s success and the successes of other communication arts graduates, Fuller Beeler is confident in the caliber of education within the department. “Our students are better prepared than those at many schools because we are so focused on providing opportunities for hands-on experiences. Students graduate with portfolio-quality class work, internship experiences, and work with Fifth Street Communications®, our student-staffed public relations agency,” said Fuller Beeler. “These experiences, plus their coursework, provide them with great experience and can give them an edge in the job market.”
