Anderson University’s School of Nursing recently announced the charter induction ceremony of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing honor society. The ceremony and luncheon will take place in the lobby of Reardon Auditorium on Friday, May 5, at 12 noon. Marlene Poe-Greskamp, AU associate professor of Nursing and president of the AU chapter, Upsilon Gamma, will be the featured speaker.
Lawrence Brownlee, a graduate of Anderson University has won a 30-thousand-dollar award for singing. Brownlee makes his Metropolitan Opera debut next year. He's the winner of this year's Richard Tucker Award, named in honor of the great American tenor. Brownlee received a bachelor of arts degree from Anderson University and a master of music degree from Indiana University. He began singing professionally more than four years ago and has sung at La Scala; the Vienna State Opera; Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; and the Teatro Real in Madrid, Spain.
The Anderson Media Group, a student company housed in the Falls School of Business, is preparing to reach its largest audience yet. April 26 will mark the release of the first issue of Falls Report, a business magazine for the greater Anderson community. The 32-page magazine focuses on growing business and commerce in the greater Madison County area. The first issue of the Falls Report will be distributed through The Herald Bulletin and by direct mail to Madison County Chamber of Commerce companies.
Two recent Anderson University graduates were among five killed in a plane crash just outside of Bloomington late Thursday night. The plane wasn’t discovered until about 4 a.m. Friday. The cause of the accident is unknown. Zachary J. Novak, 25, a 1999 Highland and a 2004 AU graduate; and Garth A. Eppley, 25, a 2003 AU graduate from Wabash, both died in the crash. The Indiana University Schools of Music graduate students were returning from a rehearsal for a community concert in West Lafayette when the plane disappeared from radar about 11:40 p.m.
Two students were recently honored for achieving a 4.0 cumulative GPA during their years at Anderson University. Laura Steiner and Loretta Black both graduated through the elementary education department. Steiner, from Maumee, Ohio, plans to move to Colorado Springs after graduation to look for employment. Black, a native of Daytona Beach, Florida, was unable to attend the chapel since her graduation in December. AU also announced the 2005-2006 Male and Female Senior Athletes of the Year at chapel.
Anderson University’s Orangehaus Records recently announced that they will co-sponsor a campaign with Acting on AIDS to inform the community about the AIDS pandemic. DISRUPTION will be a week-long community awareness campaign, designed to bring attention to and raise money for the AIDS epidemic in Africa. The program will coincide with the CD release of Orangehaus’ newest artist, Nathanael Hency. Hency will make his debut performance and official CD release on Sunday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at East Side Church of God.
Anderson University senior Amy Myers recently won a $15,000 award during the 2006 INvision AU Entrepreneur Award Competition. A Vero Beach, Fla., native, Myers is a management major who plans to pursue a master’s degree through the Falls School of Business in the fall. With the award, Myers intends to invest in her winning business proposal called Spontaneity Designs, LLC. The product line of Spontaneity Designs includes the Cozy Muff-a 16th century hand warmer with a 21st century twist.
Anderson University head baseball coach Don Brandon won his 1,000th career game on Sunday afternoon as the Ravens defeated Franklin College 6-3 in 10 innings. "It was exciting and the players were really into it," said Brandon, who received the water-cooler-over-the-head treatment after the game. "I've been blessed with good health in something I love to do. I love working for Anderson University.
Anderson University alum, Christa Wells, was named Songwriter of the Year on April 5 at the 37th Annual Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards in Nashville, Tenn. Wells, BA ’95, was awarded Songwriter of the Year for her original song "Held," which appeared on Natalie Grant’s most recent album, "Awaken." Wells, a native of Wheaton, Ill., currently resides in Raleigh, N.C.
In the past 89 years, nearly 100 members of the Kardatzke family have graduated from Anderson University. So in 1957, when Dr. Nyle Kardatzke was looking to attend college, Anderson would have seemed to be the natural choice. Growing up deeply rooted in the Church of God and often visiting the campus for annual North American Conventions of the Church of God, Nyle admitted that it had become a long-standing expectation of his to attend AU, but when the time came, he dragged his feet and didn’t enroll until August. “I made up my mind right before school,” he said.
