English Language Arts Teaching Major

English Language Arts Teaching majors cultivate a passion for literature, storytelling, and the English language for the next generation.

Overview

Share your passion for literature and writing with bright, curious students as a professional educator. Serve these young learners as a mentor, collaborator, and partner as they gain the knowledge and skills necessary to live a rich, fulfilling life.

Students who major in English Language Arts Teaching learn how to engage middle school and high school students with a passionate love of literature, storytelling and the English language. From your first observation experiences in school classrooms to your professional semester of student teaching, we prepare our majors to design and implement engaging instructional methods and creative learning activities. As an English Language Arts Teaching major, you will learn from faculty in both the English program and the Department of Teacher Education, practice experiential learning, develop a deep understanding of instructional methods and key assessment strategies, and have hands-on experience in local school classrooms every single semester. With 100% job placement for our graduates, students who complete this degree solidify their calling and move into their first teaching positions with confidence and professionalism.

Rachel’s story as a Raven

“The Anderson University English department is one of the best on campus, and at its helm is a gifted group of mentors who provide life-changing guidance and support. As a recent graduate, I can attest that the English Language Arts Teaching major provided me with the skills, knowledge, and experience that I needed to succeed in my career and in my daily life. The English department molded me into the person, and the educator, that I am today.”

– Rachel Woodlock, English Language Arts Teaching major

Explore TEACH Grants

Anderson University participates in the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program. A TEACH grant is a non-need-based grant provided to students who intend to teach, in order to help pay for their postsecondary education.

As a condition for receiving a TEACH grant, a student must agree to teach full time for at least four years as a highly qualified teacher in a high-need field, in a school or educational service agency (ESA) serving low-income students, within eight years of completing or otherwise ceasing to be enrolled in the program of study for which the student received the grant.

If the student does not meet the terms of the TEACH grant service obligation, all TEACH grant funds received will be converted to a direct unsubsidized loan that must be repaid in full, with interest charged from the date of each TEACH grant disbursement.

At Anderson University, TEACH grants are offered to undergraduates who meet the 3.25 GPA requirement and have been admitted into the teacher preparation program (TPP). The director of the Department of Teacher Education approves the TEACH grant for each year that a student applies. Click here for a TEACH Grant Application [PDF].
