Last week, we looked at a snapshot of the current numbers in relation to three categories: employment, education, and housing. This week, we will build upon that foundation in each of those areas and, in some cases, mention what is being done — or can be done — to improve outcomes.
To be useful, an economic overview should contain at least two parts: a snapshot of what has historically been and an outlook of what likely looks to be. The purpose of this discussion is to fulfill the first part in three crucial categories with the outlook coming next week. While the numbers may look discouraging, they tell a story that cannot be avoided no matter how cold they may appear.
The Anderson University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) program is off to a great start for the 2012-2013 academic year. The students are working on the projects that have been ongoing for the past several years in addition to several new projects. Ongoing projects include Flying to Financial Freedom, where budgeting and credit management are worked on; and Cheat Your Neighbor, Cheat Yourself, which focuses on teaching the importance of ethical behavior to elementary students.
The Economic Club of Indiana has the mission of providing a public forum for the discussion of economic issues within the state. The most prominent method of so doing is by means of a luncheon they host approximately once per month at the Indianapolis Convention Center with a guest speaker addressing political, economic, or social matters. The cost of attending a luncheon is $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers. The number of members in the organization is low as there is no great benefit to the membership — which costs $60 — outside of the discounted luncheon tickets.
The International Business Institute (IBI) is a program that is integrated with the global business major. Anderson University students Liz Cox and Ian Illig were two of 40 students who, through the IBI, had the opportunity to travel this summer to more than 13 countries, while learning about cultures and business.
