AU mourns passing of Lucille Strawn

Anderson University received word that longtime institutional friend and Registrar Emeritus, Lucille Strawn, passed away. Strawn first worked for the Registrar's Office during her student days as a business education major prior to graduation from Anderson University in 1950. She taught high school business in central Illinois for two years before returning to the campus in 1952 and beginning a very distinguished 37 year career with the university. During the summer of 1987, Lucille was honored by receiving the John H. Kane Loyalty award from the AU Alumni Association.



Lucille A. Strawn, Age 76, Anderson, IN, died at St. John's Medical Center on Dec. 4, 2003, from an extended illness. She was born in Cimarron, Kansas on Sept. 5, 1927 and came to Anderson to attend Anderson College in 1945 and has spent most of her life in the community. She served 37 years with Anderson University, the last 15 years as University Registrar. Upon her retirement in 1989, she was honored with the title of Registrar Emeritus from the Anderson University Board of Trustees.

She graduated from Anderson University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Education and spent two years teaching high school business classes in Illinois. She returned to Anderson in 1952 to work for the Registrar's Office. She has been a member of Park Place Church of God since the 1940's and was a member of the Anderson Altrusa Club, American Association of University Women, Indiana Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers and Better Breathers Support Group of St. John's Medical Center.

In 1987, she received the John H. Kane Loyalty Award from the Anderson University Alumni Association. She was an avid traveler visiting most all of the United States and European countries. In addition, she traveled to Nassau, Belize, Jamaica, Peru, Greece, Spain, New Zealand, and Australia. In addition, she expressed a love for photography-capturing images of building developments on the AU campus as well as many of her trips abroad with friends that were placed in her biography entitled, I've Been There.

Survivors include her brother-in-law, Dr. Robert H. Reardon of Anderson, Step-brother, Robert Hurst of Eureka, Ill.; several cousins, nieces and nephews, three close friends, Darlene Miller, Carol Olson and Bernice Shoot. She was preceded in death by father, George Strawn, 1936, mother, Elizabeth B. Strawn-Hurst in 1984, step-father, Verner Hurst, 1973; step brother, James R. Hurst, 1983; and step-sister, Geraldine Reardon, 2001.

The funeral service for Lucille Strawn will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 5 p.m. with visitation two hours preceding. Visitation and funeral will be conducted at Rozelle Johnson Funeral Service located at 229 South Rangeline Road in Anderson, IN. Burial will conducted at a later date at Maplehill Cemetery in Princeton, Indiana.
