Career Development Services
Today's graduates will likely make a number of job and career changes. For this reason, career counseling is vital. Whether a student is a first time Freshman or returning as an adult, the experienced counselors in our office can provide support to all AU students as they make career and life-planning decisions. We offer one-on one counseling, as well as LART1200 Career and Life Planning Class. We utilize a number of inventories, including the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a personality inventory, and the Merkler/Holland Self-Directed Search (SDS), an interest inventory.
We also assist ALL students with Job and Internship Search, Résumés and Cover Letters, Networking and Etiquette Sessions, Mock Interviewing, and Graduate School research and preparation.
Career and Life Planning class (LART1200) or Career Counseling
Our students can explore occupations AND earn college credit! In Career and Life Planning (LART1200), a one-semester class, students gain the tools they need to make good career decisions both now and in the future. Freshmen and Sophomores who have not declared a major would benefit from the structured format of Career and Life Planning. Juniors and Seniors may benefit from one-on-one career counseling. In both formats we use a variety of tools to help a student make sound, life-long career decisions. These tools include the assessments and inventories in personality, interests, skills, values, and more.
Assessments and Inventories
- Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an inventory designed to evaluate your personality traits. This inventory is very beneficial to students who are interested in learning more about themselves. We find that personality is key in job satisfaction and career decision making. No single inventory can provide all the elements to make a sound career decision. For this reason, we schedule students to take other inventories, not just the Myers-Briggs.
- The Merkler Interest Inventory (based on the Holland Self-Directed Search (SDS) designed by John Holland) assists students in determining their interests. Knowing your interests is important to assessing career fit. No single inventory can provide all the elements to make a sound career decision, for this reason, we schedule a student to take other inventories, not just the Merkler inventory.
