Bachelor of Arts, Sociology and Mathematics major
During my academic career at Anderson University, I was able to learn in, as well as outside, the classroom. Faculty and staff in the departments I majored in—mathematics and sociology—were always willing to go the extra mile to help students, whatever their needs were. Many of my professors had an open door where I could ask questions about specific classes or discuss career goals and life aspirations. This played a key role in helping me decide my plans after graduation. Because of the faculty’s commitment to helping students, I was able to obtain a career in my field of study and will soon expand my education in graduate school. I have grown both academically and personally as a result of AU’s strong commitment to its students. I feel very fortunate to have had that experience.
Some Highlights
- Criminal justice is an excellent stand-alone major, but is also easily combined as a double major with other pertinent fields. The major is seldom seen among comparable schools.
- The family science major provides preparation for careers related to marriage and family issues or for graduate study. It is flexible enough to be combined as a double major with a related discipline.
- The sociology major—either alone or in combination with another major—prepares students for graduate work or careers in government, social services, business, law and related areas.
- The Social Work Program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education, and faculty members have given presentations at national conferences, including NASW and NACSW conferences.
- Field experience is emphasized. Social work majors complete three mini-internships and a full-semester practicum, and criminal justice majors complete two internships. Sociology and family science majors are strongly encouraged to complete an internship.
Unique Opportunities
Social work students take a senior trip, providing services to people in need. This is also an opportunity to reflect on their university years and celebrate their upcoming graduation. Past trips have included San Fransisco, Atlanta, Louisville, and Washington, D.C.
