Sean C. Hill, M.A.
Ph.D. Candidate and Fellow in research methodology/human development at Loyola University
Bachelor of Arts, Psychology major
Anderson University’s psychology department provided me with a broad knowledge base in psychology and the human condition. The advocacy of liberal arts education is present not only through the diversity of degree requirements but also within the department. One can find courses on the biological, social, research, applied and spiritual aspects of psychology. I was particularly impressed with the infusion of philosophical themes through such authors as Jean-Paul Sartre, St. Augustine and Plato. These works helped to place the discipline in a framework that emphasizes our responsibility as psychologists and citizens to care for others and is also compatible with the ideals of Christian stewardship. The advanced-level research courses offered at AU gave me a strong theoretical foundation that has proven to be beneficial for graduate courses and applied research. The department offerings are comparable to that of larger institutions. Specifically, the course work that I completed in experimental design and correlation and regression gave me an advantage over my peers in graduate school.
Some Highlights
- The department offers an excellent bio-psychology lab, a rarity among smaller Christian schools, but an important preparation for graduate work.
- Integration of psychology and Christianity is the hallmark of the department, and two professors have authored their own textbook in this area.
- The faculty includes a licensed counseling psychologist who practices on a limited basis. Students benefit from his practical application and sharpened skills.
- AU’s top psychology students are competitive on a national level, scoring in the top 10 percent in the psychology portion of the Graduate Record Exam.
- The department fosters collaboration in research activities.
