Physical Sciences and EngineeringThe Department of Physical Sciences and Engineering offers majors in biochemistry, chemistry, physics, computational physics, physical science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering; and minors in chemistry and physics. For students interested in secondary-level teaching, the department offers a complementary major, TeachScience.
The Department of Physical Sciences and Engineering is dedicated to offering the highest quality education while also preparing students for a life of faith and service. With small class sizes, students receive individual attention and get to know the faculty on a personal level. Our students gain broad scientific and engineering knowledge in the classroom while having opportunities to do significant research. With the skills gained in these programs, our students go on to medical and doctoral programs in addition to scientific and engineering careers in industry.
Hartung Hall, the AU science building, was part of a $5 million, 30,000-square-foot expansion and renovation project. New classrooms and quality instrumentation make AU one of the best study opportunities available. This state-of-the-art facility houses labs designed for coursework in all areas of physical sciences and supports the use of computers for analyzing data and processing instrument signals.
Internship opportunities and summer research employment opportunities are available to students, especially after their sophomore and junior years. Students have worked at Brookhaven National Laboratories, Argonne National Lab, and many other companies and universities.
